I love any fruit, but in particular, I love SWEET fruit – especially fruit that is in season. During this time of year, I absolutely cannot resist the urge to enjoy my favorite apples, pears and persimmons! The variety you can find in the stores here in the US is also just astounding. I don’t think I knew there was so much variety. I’ve also learnt through my time living here that I prefer very sweet apples (so personally I’m not as big of fan of Granny Smith or honey crisp apples where there is a slight tartness). Whether that means enjoying them as is or in desserts, I can’t say no either!
Today we’re re-introducing and revamping an older recipe for our gluten free, dairy free apple crisp or some may call this apple crumble. I honestly can’t tell you what the difference is between the two and back home these two names/titles are relatively interchangeably. I love the contrast of warm, fruity dessert with cold sweet vanilla ice cream and a delicious crunchy, fragrant crumble. The thicker the crumble the better! This is one of those versatile treats that almost everyone loves – both adults and kids. My dad who’s not a big fan of chocolate loves anything fruity!
We made this and served this recently to friends and they all loved it (non-gluten free guests too!). If you’re looking for something slightly more nutritious and healthier – this is the perfect fall treat. Generally we prefer mildly sweet desserts (compared to what I would call the typical American palate) so do adjust the sugar levels here to your liking. We also like to use natural sources of sugar so using good quality sweet apples is going to make all the difference here!
Happy Fall!
