We decided to make gyros! Yes homemade gyros for a delicious Sunday spread for Zoe’s baby shower. We made a whole charcuterie spread of fresh veggies, dips as well as gyros with various condiments like tzatziki, pickled onions….It was a fantastic feast that the WHOLE family loved. They were absolutely fascinated that you could make gyros at home – something that isn’t common in Asia!
Traditional gyros originate from Greece/Turkey. Other countries have similar versions of this such as shawarma or Turkish doner kebab. If you’ve never tried it before it is essentially beef, pork or lamb and usually cooked on a vertical rotisserie. It is then shaved into thin slices and served on a pita or in a pita wrap with different condiments to balance the rich, fatty meat! This version we are introducing today is a homemade version made in the oven for ease. You don’t lose out on any flavors here but it certainly does satisfy those cravings for a good gyro! You can serve this as part of a salad, wrap! It is absolutely delicious!
Subsitutes:
- This recipe can be made with beef/pork/lamb – your ground meat of choice. We love the combo of beef and lamb!
- The condiments is also what makes this recipe so good – don’t skip out on those – even if it means you buy your own vs. store brought!
Give this easy version a try at home – and you won’t regret it!
- Ingredients:
- 22 oz ground lamb
- 1 lb ground beef (we used 90% lean)
- 1 shallot
- ½ large white onion
- 10 cloves garlic
- Spice Mix:
- 1 tbsp + 1 tsp oregano or Italian seasoning
- 1 tbsp salt
- 2½ tsp smoked papriak
- 2 tsp black pepper
- 1¼ tsp ground coriander
- 1¼ tsp ground cumin
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- In a food processor, blitz onion, garlic and shallots until finely chopped.
- Add meat and spices, blitz until just combined.
- Tightly pack the meat into an oiled cake pan or oven tray. If you are using an oven tray you want to shape it into a rectangular shape about 1.5 inches thick.
- Bake until cooked (approx 20 mins). Cover with foil and let it rest for 30.mins before thinly slicing.
- Extra step (highly recommend): Heat up a pan, add some of the leftover juice and fry thinly sliced gyros until brown.
