As we began our health journey, we thought that going gluten free, dairy free would help us lose weight. It did reduce bloating and help with acne issues, but it wasn’t as effective as we thought. In fact, “gluten free” foods such as breads, burgers, crackers, dairy free cheeses are just as unhealthy as the original, if not worse for you! In order to replace the texture and flavor, they are often packed with more sugars, more starches and more flavorings to make them taste “better”.
1) All our recipes (especially desserts) do not require any flour mixes/blends, since they are not accessible to everyone. The main flours we use are: almond flour, coconut flour, tapioca starch, oat flour, brown rice flour.
Our intolerances was the just the introduction into this whole new world of cooking. It became clear to us that in order to replicate our favorite desserts, cakes or meals we would have to make our own recipes. Most were either way too complicated or just full of butter/fat/oils.
2) We try to make our recipes low in fat. Most of our desserts do not require much oil at all, we try to use other options like yogurt, applesauce. If we did use oil we go for coconut oil or nut butters.
Another aspect of gluten free cooking is it being too hard! Shouldn’t gluten free cooking be simple? Couldn’t we make healthy living simpler? As these thoughts crossed our minds, we decided to learn as much as we can about allergy free cooking. With Zoe’s food science background and my neuroscience background, we did as much research as we could to educate ourselves about the science behind cooking.
3) We try to make our recipes as simple as possible! Especially our desserts!
Eating clean is more than just going on a “diet”. It is about balance of nutrition and good exercise. We learned overtime that simply restricting how much you eat doesn’t necessarily help you lose weight. In fact, after some time your body will naturally go into starvation mode and store fat. On the other hand, overeating and constant exercising isn’t the best way to go either. No matter how much you exercise, 80% of weight loss is still due to diet. To help ourselves stay fit and healthy we wanted to create recipes that would help us find this optimal balance between nourishing our bodies so we could exercise and stay active. Our blog has become a motivation for us to continue to eat clean. They include recipes that we have created our ourselves to eat everyday, as well as on special occasions.
Our philosophy is that healthy cooking is also for those who aren’t gluten free or dairy free. We believe clean eating is for anyone and everyone. We aim to use accessible, cheap ingredients for all to make and enjoy. Eat well, and stay fit. That is our motto.
So,
