9am and I hear a little knock on the door. Raena (my little sister) pops her head in, “Bye, see ya tonight”.
I turned around, smiling and jokingly replied, “What are you serious?”
Although we live under the same roof, we hardly spend much time together. Sometimes I don’t see her all day, sometimes all I hear is her footsteps and the bang of the front door closing. For being sisters we were very different. Raena was the life of the party. She’s very outgoing, always out hiking, camping, kayaking, barbecues; stuffing herself with cheesecake/ice-cream. Zoe and I, on the other hand, are complete stay-home bodies, content with quiet time and a big bowl of salad. While we were both somewhat reserved, serious and type A perfectionists; Raena is carefree, spirited and independent.
Despite our contrasting differences in personality, there are similarities that I truly cherish. One is our love and obsession with hummus. We all love our carrots in hummus. That being said, the downside of that means that our hummus always runs out in our house.
We have been experimenting with hummus for the past couple of years. Different flavors, different methods to make the best creamy hummus that doesn’t involve pour half a cup of olive oil. Recently, Zoe discovered this amazing technique to make oil-free hummus at home. THE TRICK? you would never believe this! But its an ice cube.
Interesting right? So long as you have a high speed blender the ice cube should do the trick.
Ever since that day we made hummus using an ice cube, we have never brought a single tub of store-bought hummus. Thats how good it is! Best yet ITS SO MUCH CHEAPER! You can make hummus at the fraction of the price – and best yet, it is way healthier.
Another caution: Getting the BEST brand of tahini is crucial for this recipe. HOWEVER, for our wonderful readers we have found an alternative if you don’t want to spend USD $10 on a jar of tahini. You can use 3 tbsp of white sesame seeds to replace it. It may take a little more time, but the flavor is still spot on.
So there you go, the CHEAPEST, CREAMIEST OIL-FREE HUMMUS!
- 1 can Chickpeas (15oz)*
- 2 tbsp tahini (the brand we use) (OR 3 tbsp white sesame seeds)
- 2 cloves garlic
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground cumin
- 2 tbsp lemon juice + more to taste
- 1 ice cube
- Drain chickpeas well and rinse under cold water.
- Add all ingredients except the ice cube into a high speed blender (you will need a powerful one for this). Blend till smooth, scrapping down in between.
- Add the ice cube in and blend patiently until it is full incorporated.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
